At The Lab, we’re passionate about supporting artists with the tools and options they need to succeed. One way we do this is by offering a variety of blockchains to mint your art. If you’re new to blockchain technology, this article will help you understand your options and how they impact your creative process.

What is a Blockchain?

A blockchain is a decentralized, secure digital ledger that records transactions across many computers. It’s the foundation of NFTs and allows you to mint, trade, and interact with your digital artwork.

Currently, The Lab supports minting on four blockchains: Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, and Shape. As we expand our platform, more blockchains may be added.

Ethereum

Ethereum is the most widely used blockchain for NFTs, known for its:

  • Robust Security: Trusted by the largest NFT communities.

  • High Adoption: A recognized platform with significant market visibility.

However, Ethereum often experiences high gas fees and slower transaction speeds during periods of heavy network traffic.

Base

Base, developed by Coinbase, is a Layer 2 solution built on Ethereum, offering:

  • Lower Environmental Impact: Uses a proof-of-stake mechanism for reduced energy consumption.

  • Lower Costs: Competitive gas fees make it an economical choice for creators.

  • Fast Transactions: Speedy processes let you mint and interact efficiently.

For creators who value sustainability and affordability, Base is a fantastic option.

Arbitrum

Arbitrum is another Ethereum Layer 2 solution with:

  • Lower Transaction Costs: Significantly reduced fees compared to Ethereum.

  • Faster Transactions: Ideal for fast-paced projects.

  • Scalability: Handles high transaction volumes effortlessly.

Like Base, Arbitrum is for creators who value sustainability and affordability.

Shape

Shape is the newest addition to our supported blockchains and is specifically designed for creators. Here’s what makes Shape stand out:

  • Gasback Program: Creators get 80% of the sequencer fees back from contract interactions, directly rewarding your contributions to the network.

  • Low Costs: Ethereum-compatible but with a fraction of the cost.

  • Security & Scalability: Inherits Ethereum's security and offers a stable, scalable environment.

Shape is the ideal blockchain for creators looking to innovate or experiment.

Which Blockchain Should You Choose?

Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:

  • Choose Ethereum if you value high visibility and are comfortable with higher fees. Think of it as the "fine art chain."

  • Choose Base if you’re looking for an eco-friendly option with lower fees and fast transactions.

  • Choose Arbitrum if you prioritize low costs and scalability for high-volume or experimental projects.

  • Choose Shape if you want to benefit from the Gasback program, low fees, and an ecosystem designed for creators.

Need Help Deciding?
